Field Trip to Isla Magueyes

December 9, 2017

On Saturday, December 9, 2017, the Sea Grant Program of the University of Puerto Rico, in collaboration with the Department of Agro-Environmental Sciences, conducted a field trip to Isla Magueyes with a group of students from the course INTD 3990 Section 060 – Selected Topics with Multidisciplinary Approaches: Exploring solutions to environmental pollution sources in the Valle de Lajas watershed, taught by Dr. David Sotomayor. The purpose of this trip was for participants to learn about marine and coastal ecosystems and some organisms associated with them. The students and their leaders took a boat tour through the cays of La Parguera, where they could firsthand study the mangrove, seagrass meadows, and coral reefs. Near Cayo Enrique, they snorkeled and observed various species of marine organisms that inhabit these ecosystems. Later, when they returned to Isla Magueyes, the students had the opportunity to visit the Visitor Center of the Department of Marine Sciences, where they received a talk about the offerings of this department. Afterward, they conducted a plankton laboratory and received a workshop on beach composition (sands). The students enjoyed and learned about these crucial ecosystems and the pressing need to keep them healthy for everyone’s enjoyment.
