The CETE Club Continues Working on the Guardarenas Project

March 20, 2018

The Ecotourism Student Club (CETE), composed of students from Manuel García Pérez High School in Rincón, returned on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, to the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve in the same town (specifically Playa Escalera) to continue collecting data for the Guardarenas Project. Their interest is to see how this beach is changing over time, especially after Hurricane Maria passed through our archipelago. This time, the students placed more emphasis on measuring the profile to analyze how Playa Escalera has been eroding. During this visit, the students reviewed how to read the Abney Level, an instrument that contains a Vernier scale used to measure the slope of the terrain, and observed the changes that this area has undergone. On the other hand, the students also tested an alternative methodology for these measurements. This methodology includes using a hand level with which they obtained the elevation of various points selected within a transect, and then calculated the angle of inclination of this area. After both measurements, the participants determined which methodology was more convenient. When the data were analyzed, they showed that the erosion level of the area had not changed significantly since the last time measurements were taken. This activity was very important as the new members of the CETE Club took these measurements for the first time and learned a lot. Meanwhile, the old members of the organization passed on their knowledge to the new members, forming an excellent network of collaboration and teamwork. It was a very enriching experience for them. Congratulations, keep moving forward!
