Students from the Specialized Science and Mathematics School Thomas Armstrong in Ponce Visit Isla Magueyes

December 15, 2018

A group of 27 students and 3 teachers from the specialized science and mathematics school Thomas Armstrong in Ponce visited Isla Magueyes to learn about marine and coastal ecosystems. During the morning of Saturday, December 15, 2018, these young people went out on the boats of the Department of Marine Sciences (DCM) at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez to see the cays of La Parguera. There, they were shown the mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs. Once they arrived at Cayo Enrique, the students had the opportunity to get off the boat to snorkel and observe the organisms that inhabit there. In the afternoon, when they returned, the Sea Grant Program carried out various activities on meteorology, sand composition, and marine invertebrates. First, they were welcomed at the Visitor Center and were informed about the DCM and Sea Grant. In this place, they were also given instructions to start the tour of the island. Then, the students walked to the viewpoint where they observed the fauna and flora characteristic of this area and the cays they had seen from the boats. Taking advantage of their stay there, the meteorology station was offered. In this station, various weather parameters were measured: atmospheric pressure, wind speed, temperature, and relative humidity, among others. In the end, they made their own weather forecast.

Descending from the viewpoint, they took the workshop on sand composition. In this workshop, they created a sand sample collection and observed it under a microscope to analyze it in terms of the materials that compose it, roundness, sorting, among others. The students loved this station, and many of them took photos of the sands through the microscope eyepiece. After finishing, they walked to the tank in front of the Visitor Center. There, they studied some marine invertebrates that they could touch and get to know up close. The students were very happy with everything they learned. It was a very enriching experience for them. We wish them the greatest success. Keep moving forward!
