Students from Ramón Olivares Elementary School Have Their first Field Trip to Isla Magueyes

October 19, 2018

On Friday, October 19, 2018, students from Ramón Olivares Elementary School in Lajas visited Isla Magueyes for a tour and to learn about the marine and coastal ecosystems found there. Upon arriving in the area, they crossed by boat to reach the island. The students were very excited because many of them were riding a boat for the first time. The first thing they observed upon entering Magueyes were the iguanas that live there, which impressed them greatly. Later, they went to the Visitor Center to start their field trip. There, they were welcomed and informed about the Sea Grant Program and the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez. After this, they were given instructions, and the tour of the island began. First, they went up to the viewpoint. As they walked to this location, they observed different plants characteristic of the area. When they reached the viewpoint, they observed the cays of La Parguera. After seeing these cays, the students observed the clouds and measured various weather parameters, while learning about the difference between climate and weather. After finishing this activity, they went down to the main building of the island to take the workshop on sand composition. There, they analyzed various sand samples and created a sample. This activity was very attractive to them, as they could observe the sand grains through a field microscope and saw them like they had never seen them before. The next activity was to learn about the mangrove trees that live on this island. For this, they went outside the building again and toured the mangrove areas to see their characteristics. Finally, they went to the pond of organisms located in front of the Visitor Center to learn firsthand about marine invertebrates. Some of the organisms they saw and touched were starfish, black sea urchins, sea cucumbers, among others. After completing this activity, they returned to the dock where they said goodbye very happily for having had this experience that they will never forget. We hope to see them again soon!
