Students from Monserrate León de Irizarry School Visit Isla Magueyes

March 28, 2019 - March 29, 2019

On March 28 and 29, 2019, 116 ninth-grade students from Monserrate León de Irizarry School, along with their teacher Brenda L. Estévez Moreno and other teachers and leaders, visited Isla Magueyes to explore the Department of Marine Sciences (DCM) at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, and learn about the marine and coastal ecosystems there. Once on the island, the students began their tour at the Visitor Center. There, they were briefed on the work carried out by the DCM and its graduate programs. Later, they went up to the viewpoint to see the cays of La Parguera and participate in a meteorology workshop. In this workshop, they used a portable weather station to measure various weather parameters such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, relative humidity, wind speed, among others. Afterward, they descended from the viewpoint to conduct an ocean acidification laboratory.

Once finished, they received a theoretical introduction to microplastics and headed to the venue’s court to play a game. For the first time, we offered this important topic, as plastics are engulfing our oceans and affecting marine species. The students had to save various marine organisms by collecting plastics. It was a fun activity that integrated these contents into physical education. They enjoyed it a lot, as did we.

To conclude, they were given a talk about invertebrates. For this, the students gathered around a pond containing various invertebrates and could see, touch, and interact with them while learning about their feeding habits, way of life, and importance within marine ecosystems, among other aspects. It was a great experience for them. We hope they continue to spread this message of conservation to help protect our environment.
