Students from Antolina Vélez Elementary and High School Visit Isla Magueyes

March 13, 2019

On Wednesday, March 13, 2019, students from Antolina Vélez Elementary and High School at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, Aguadilla Campus, visited Isla Magueyes with the purpose of exploring marine and coastal resources outside the classroom. To begin, they took a boat trip that led them through several cays of La Parguera. There, they went snorkeling to observe seagrass and coral reef ecosystems, as well as the organisms that inhabit them. They also saw mangrove trees and other species that inhabit the cays. Upon returning, they had the opportunity to attend a water quality workshop. In this workshop, students conducted tests on the water quality of the area, and their data were handed over to graduate students from the Department of Marine Sciences for use in their research. So, they made a significant contribution to these scientific works. Next, they participated in the sand composition workshop. There, they analyzed various samples, including the one from Parque Colón Beach in Aguadilla. The students were amazed when they realized that the sand from that beach contained the mineral magnetite. Educator Doris J. Rivera Santiago showed them the magnetic properties of some grains of that sand. She placed a powerful magnet over the sample, and immediately the magnetite grains separated from the rest and rose to the surface. The students’ faces reflected surprise and excitement at being able to learn about this common mineral on Puerto Rico’s beaches. It was a very enriching experience for them. Keep moving forward!
