Segundo Ruiz Belvis School

May 5, 2017

The students of Segundo Ruiz Belvis School, along with their teacher Mrs. Ángela del Toro, visited Playita Rosada, Lajas, PR on Friday, May 5, 2017. There, they had the opportunity to get to know the marine and coastal ecosystems up close. Before starting, the students briefly toured the area while taking photos of mangrove trees, the beach, the sea, among other elements that seemed very attractive to them. They were very eager to start learning about everything they observed.

When the activity began, we divided the students into groups, welcomed them, provided instructions, and they started rotating through several stations we prepared for them. At each station, they could study various topics about marine and coastal resources. They had stations that showcased the mangrove and seagrass ecosystems. Other stations were focused on describing the composition of the sand and understanding important aspects of meteorology. They also participated in stations dedicated to showing marine invertebrate organisms and explaining what the lionfish is and its implications as an invasive species in Caribbean waters.

At each station, educators emphasized the importance of our marine and coastal ecosystems and the need to conserve, protect, and use them sustainably. The students were very attentive to everything that was offered, asked many questions, and were able to clarify their doubts. They were very happy to have taken this field trip as it was an enriching and valuable experience for them.
