San Agustín School

On February 17, 2016, a workshop on marine ecosystems took place at San Agustín School in Cabo Rojo. During this workshop, students were introduced to the ecosystems of mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. Various types of hard and flexible corals were shown to the students, and their structure was explained. The importance of mangroves and seagrasses was also discussed. In the presentation of the seagrass ecosystem, students participated in a game to highlight its importance. To conclude, a workshop on sands was offered. In this activity, students analyzed different types of sands, observed the roundness, shine, and grain size using a field microscope. They loved this instrument and continued to use it to observe the composition of the sand and its origin. Afterward, some of the students stayed to ask scientific aspects about the coral and the green and hawksbill turtles.
