Robinson School Students Have a Great Educational Experience

February 28, 2019

The students from Robinson School in San Juan visited Isla Magueyes in La Parguera, Lajas, Puerto Rico, to firsthand experience marine and coastal resources. The activity took place on Thursday, February 28, 2019. They began with a boat tour of the cays of La Parguera alongside the Department of Marine Sciences. During their journey, they were able to observe mangrove trees, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and the organisms inhabiting these ecosystems, especially invertebrates. One of the things they enjoyed the most was snorkeling. Once they returned, and after lunch, they divided into two groups to participate in a plankton laboratory and a sand composition workshop. In the plankton laboratory, they had the opportunity to observe under a microscope and identify different planktonic organisms, classifying them as zooplankton or phytoplankton. They were very impressed with these and learned a lot about them. On the other hand, during the sand composition workshop, they analyzed the composition of various sand samples from four beaches in Puerto Rico. There, they determined the elements forming these sands, their size, roundness or angularity, color, among other characteristics. It was an excellent activity that will benefit them both academically and in their daily lives.
