January 30, 2010

On January 30, 2010, the Sea Grant Program at the University of Puerto Rico coordinated a meeting with teachers and community leaders who participated in the Guardarenas Project workshop in 2008. The purpose of this meeting was to define and establish guidelines for the formal initiation of the Project in Puerto Rico. Additionally, for the first time, materials and equipment subsidized by the Caribbean Regional Association (ARCa) were distributed as a collaboration to implement the project. During this activity, participants heard from various teachers and leaders who had successfully carried out Guardarenas activities. They were also introduced to the topic of Climate Change, which was recently added to the Project’s activities. Furthermore, Dr. Álida Ortiz gave a talk on how to use the instruments provided that day. On the other hand, Dr. Yasmín Detrés presented the work that ARCa has been carrying out in the Caribbean and its importance. It was an extremely productive activity that led to a practical workshop and the formal initiation of the project.
