Residential Guardarenas 2013

June 7, 2013 - June 9, 2013

During the days from June 7 to June 9, 2013, a training session for the Guardarenas Project took place at the Añasco Vacation Center. This residential involved 25 teachers and community leaders who had a keen interest in the conservation of our marine and coastal resources. Each of them had the opportunity to engage in various activities, which they could later replicate with their students and volunteer groups to teach them the importance of protecting our resources. The group learned to measure the profile of a beach to determine whether it is expanding or eroding, assessed water quality, current speed, wind speed, calculated wave periods, studied and classified different types of sand, among other activities.

Workshops were also offered to help participants learn how to handle and analyze the collected data. They were taught to work with the Profile program, how to read the Abney Level, how to use Excel to create graphs, and how to present data in PowerPoint. Additionally, experiences from other groups participating in the Project were shared, helping to clarify any doubts about the Project’s dynamics.

It was a great educational experience that these leaders will undoubtedly use to promote the preservation and wise use of our marine resources.
