Luis Muñoz Marín School

April 13, 2016

On Wednesday, April 13, 2016, we offered a workshop on marine ecosystems to students at Luis Muñoz Marín School in Cabo Rojo. A group of ninth-grade students, several teachers, and various parents attended the workshop. During the workshop, we discussed mangroves, seagrass meadows, during which we conducted a game on the importance of these plants. This game took place on the school’s court, and the students had a lot of fun. Later, we presented the coral reef ecosystem. We showed different types of corals for them to touch and perceive their shape and structure. We also introduced two turtles: the green and the hawksbill. To conclude, we worked with different types of sands for the students to analyze and determine their composition. The participants enjoyed this workshop very much.

The next day, these young people visited Playita Rosada in La Parguera, Lajas, along with us. They arrived very excited to firsthand experience all the ecosystems we had studied the day before. The students rotated through various stations where activities related to these ecosystems and their components were carried out: mangroves, seagrass meadows, invertebrates, water quality, and meteorology. They loved experiencing each of these marine and coastal resources live. They learned a lot and enjoyed this field trip immensely.
