José Rodríguez de Soto Elementary School

April 6, 2016

On Wednesday, April 6, 2016, we conducted a marine ecosystems workshop at José Rodríguez de Soto Elementary School in Guánica. This activity was attended by 28 fifth-grade students, several parents, a professor from the University of the East, and two university students. During the workshop, we discussed mangroves and read the story “El tesoro de Pepe Uca.” While narrating this story, students, parents, and teachers acted it out, and the educators provided the voices of the characters. It was a very fun and educational moment because through the story, students could learn where mangroves are in Puerto Rico and the characteristics that mangrove trees need to live. Next, we provided information about seagrass meadows. Here, we stopped to play a game. In this game, students could see the importance of this ecosystem. They were entertained and enjoyed it a lot. In the end, we presented corals, showed them various samples of these animals, and some turtles. Additionally, we showed them a video summarizing what was offered during the talk. It was a great experience for them and for us.

Then, on Friday, April 8, 2016, the students, parents, teachers, and guests were on a field trip held at Playita Rosada. There, they had the opportunity to observe and engage in various activities with the ecosystems studied during the workshop. They saw mangroves and their characteristics up close, analyzed the composition of the sand, touched seagrasses and invertebrate organisms to learn about them. Moreover, they studied weather and time concepts to make their own weather forecast. It was an enriching experience.
