Guardarenas Project Workshop at the Villas de Añasco Vacation Center

September 18, 2010

The Sea Grant Program at the University of Puerto Rico conducted another workshop for the Guardarenas Project on September 18, 2010, at the Villas de Añasco Vacation Center. In this training, 18 teachers and 2 students from different towns in Puerto Rico, who have a keen interest in teaching our children and youth the importance of protecting our marine and coastal resources, participated. They learned to measure the width and profile of the beach, the high or low tide, water quality, currents, wave height, wind direction, and to identify and recognize the composition of the beach. Sea Grant Program educators Lesbia Montero, Jorge Casillas, Francisco Soto, and Marine Sciences Master’s student Rosa Linda González each conducted workshops, providing participants with the opportunity to carry out each measurement. In this way, they learned each activity firsthand. Teachers were very excited about the Project and expressed great satisfaction in being part of this initiative.

At the end of the training, participants were provided with the materials and equipment necessary to carry out the proposed activities. They also received the manual “Introduction to Guardarenas: An educational tool for sustainable development.” This manual is a guide that offers step-by-step instructions and important information to facilitate participants in the data collection task on the beach that each one will study.
