Great Educational Experience for Students from Dr. Rafael Pujals Middle School at Playita Rosada

November 14, 2018

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, students from Dr. Rafael Pujals Middle School in Ponce, along with their teacher, Mrs. Marilyn Palermo, visited Playita Rosada in La Parguera, Lajas, Puerto Rico, to learn about the marine and coastal ecosystems in this area. The students rotated through various stations covering the following topics: mangroves, sand composition, marine invertebrates, and meteorology. They had the opportunity to explore the mangrove forest area and see the characteristics of the four species that exist in Puerto Rico. Many of these students had studied some properties of these trees; however, at Playita Rosada, they could observe them in their natural environment. They also analyzed various sand samples, including Playita Rosada’s, to verify the composition of the sand. They created a sand sample collection, observed the grains under a field microscope, and determined the elements present in each sample. On the other hand, the students had the experience of seeing and touching various invertebrate organisms that inhabit marine ecosystems. Some of these include sea cucumbers, starfish, and black sea urchins, among others. Finally, the students analyzed various weather parameters, how they affect marine ecosystems, and determined the probability of rain for the area where they were. It was a beautiful experience that they will never forget. Always move forward!
