Great Educational Experience for Students from Antillian College

April 7, 2019

On April 7, 2019, students from the Marine Biology course of Professor Wilma Vargas at Antillian College in Mayagüez visited Isla Magueyes to learn about marine ecosystems. During the morning, they traveled by boat through various cays of La Parguera to see mangroves, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, and the organisms living there. The students had the opportunity to snorkel and observe different species of marine fauna and flora. In the afternoon, educators from the Sea Grant Program provided various activities to complement the educational experience. First, they were taken to the Visitor Center, where they learned about the Department of Marine Sciences and watched a video about its offerings. Then, they were given an interesting talk/exhibition about sharks. For the first time, we integrated this topic into field trips, and it was excellent. The students learned a lot about shark species, especially those found in Puerto Rico. After that, they participated in a laboratory on ocean acidification and the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere.
