Generoso Morales School from San Lorenzo Visits Playita Rosada Again

May 17, 2019

Once again, students from Generoso Morales School in San Lorenzo visited Playita Rosada in Lajas, Puerto Rico to learn about marine and coastal ecosystems. This school had previously brought seventh-grade students to explore this resource, and now they decided to return with sixth-grade students. On May 17, 2019, Playita Rosada once again became a living laboratory where children could observe, analyze, and engage in various activities related to the ecosystems inhabiting this area.

They were divided into four (4) stations: mangroves, marine invertebrates with seagrasses and algae, sand composition, and meteorology. In the mangrove station, they could see this ecosystem firsthand and learned to recognize each tree by its main characteristics, particularly the features of their leaves. In the marine invertebrates area, students had the opportunity to observe, touch, and get up close with starfish, sea cucumbers, black and white sea urchins, and other animals. They were also taught the difference between seagrasses and algae.

In the sand workshop, they analyzed the composition of the sand and, using a field microscope, identified the various materials that make it up, such as quartz, calcium carbonate, magnetite, rocks, among others. The students were amazed to see the sand grains through this instrument as they had never realized what the sand was really like. Finally, they participated in a meteorology workshop where they drew and classified clouds. Additionally, they used a portable weather station to collect data on temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, relative humidity, among other parameters. Then, they provided their own weather forecast. It was a wonderful experience for both them and us. Thank you for your visit, keep moving forward!
