Cultural Center Camp – Lajas and Francisco María Quiñones from San Germán

June 21, 2017

On Wednesday, June 21, 2017, the Sea Grant Program of the University of Puerto Rico took a group of young people from the Cultural Center Camp in Lajas and special education students from the Francisco María Quiñones School in San Germán to Playita Rosada. There, they had the opportunity to get up close with various marine and coastal ecosystems and the organisms that inhabit them. The children and young people rotated through several stations where they were shown mangroves, the difference between seagrasses and algae, marine invertebrates, the composition of sands, and how to measure different weather and climate parameters. In this last station, the students observed the clouds and made their weather forecast for the day. The students were very attentive to everything they were taught. They loved all the stations, but the one with marine invertebrates drew much of their attention because they could observe different organisms that they usually see on the coast but didn’t know much about. It was a very enriching trip for them; undoubtedly, when they return to the beach, they will no longer see the ecosystems in the same way.
