Continuation of the Guardarenas Project in the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve in Rincón

December 13, 2017

Students from Manuel García Pérez High School in Rincón returned to Playa Escalera in the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve (RMTP) in the same town to continue collecting data proposed by the Guardarenas Project and analyzing the changes occurring on this beach. Guardarenas began in the RMTP in March 2016 when students received training to carry out the project. Later, these students visited the area in October of the same year to formally start data collection in this zone. On Wednesday, December 13, 2017, they returned to Playa Escalera to continue with the project. This visit is very important as the students collected data after Hurricane Irma and Hurricane María, both Category 4 and 5 hurricanes, passed through Puerto Rico.

Once there, they collected data on the beach profile and width, water quality, and beach composition. During the activity, the leadership of several students was highlighted, including Arnaldo Cruz, an 11th-grade student. He conducted a science fair project based on the water quality of this beach, inspired by the training received for the Guardarenas Project in this location. Therefore, he gained extensive knowledge in this type of measurement, enabling him to teach his peers the necessary methodology for collecting water quality data. This young leader led the execution of this measurement alongside our marine advisor, Berliz Morales. On the other hand, educators Doris Rivera, Héctor Martínez, and Delmis del C. Alicea Segarra helped with measurements of sand composition and beach profile. It was a gratifying experience for everyone, including those students who joined for the first time.

You can see several photos of the activity below.
