Commencement of Beach Profile Measurements at JBNERR

December 21, 2017

On Thursday, December 21, 2017, the Sea Grant Program of the University of Puerto Rico offered a workshop on beach profiles at the Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (JBNERR), located between Salinas and Guayama. This Reserve is conducting a research project with students from the Residential Center for Educational Opportunities in Villalba (CROEV). As part of this work, Professor José Torres and his students are conducting beach profiles on the Camino del Indio trail to determine the impact of erosion caused by Hurricane Maria. Marine Advisor Berliz Morales provided the workshop and brought the instruments that the Program lent to the participating group. Profile measurements began in December 2017 and are expected to conclude in June 2018.

In addition to measuring beach profiles, students are analyzing water quality using a colorimetric kit. They also collect footage of seagrasses and roots of red mangroves with their Remote Operated Marine Vehicles (ROVs). The students, along with their teacher, will visit the Reserve once a month, and each visit will involve a different educational exercise. The students are enjoying this process, and the Sea Grant Program continues its commitment to collaborate closely with the education and conservation of our marine and coastal resources.

The Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (JBNERR) has an environmental education program aimed at promoting and increasing knowledge related to the reserve and its components. If you would like to coordinate a visit to the Reserve and request environmental education services, you can contact the phone numbers 787-853-4617 / 3569 or send an email to Ernesto Olivares (eolivares@drna.pr.gov) or Nilda Peña (npena@drna.pr.gov).
