Beach Cleanup at Punta Ballenas Natural Reserve Beach

January 26, 2018

On Friday, January 26, 2018, the Sea Grant Program of the University of Puerto Rico participated in a beach cleanup organized by Para la Naturaleza, part of the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico, at Punta Ballenas Natural Reserve Beach in Guánica. During the approximately 4-hour activity, participants collected 195 pounds of trash. Among the collected waste were 100 pounds of plastic, pieces of wood, cans, fishing nets, and ropes, among other debris. After gathering the trash, it was sorted, weighed, and taken to designated containers for this purpose.

Punta Ballenas Natural Reserve is located between the municipalities of Guánica and Yauco and consists of a diverse range of ecosystems, including beaches, mangroves, saltpans, lagoons, and the dry forest, which is the most important in the Caribbean. Various species that are threatened or endangered inhabit this reserve. For this reason, it is extremely important to protect and care for this unique reserve within our archipelago. We must use natural resources sustainably so that future generations can enjoy them as we have.
