4H Program Camp – SEA, RUM

June 20, 2017

As part of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Camp organized by the Agricultural Extension Service (SEA) and the Sea Grant Program (PSG) of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, PSG educators welcomed 25 students from the 4H Program to Playita Rosada in La Parguera on June 20, 2017. The purpose of their visit was to learn firsthand about the marine and coastal ecosystems of Puerto Rico. Before arriving at Playita Rosada (in the morning), these young people had participated in a very interesting photography workshop. They were taught various techniques for taking good photos and documenting them. This way, they could capture and review the camp activities and create a presentation about what they learned. Upon reaching Playita Rosada, we offered them different stations where they could closely observe the ecosystems and organisms living there. They learned about mangrove trees, water quality, sand composition, and marine invertebrates. They also received a presentation from CARICOOS, which showed them the tools this project uses to check the state of marine currents, waves, wind, and other factors crucial for determining the weather conditions in our archipelago. During their visit to Playita, the young people took photos to include in their final project. Undoubtedly, it was a meaningful experience for them.
