The Sea Grant Program at the University of Puerto Rico is an educational program dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of marine and coastal resources in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Caribbean region. Our mission is twofold: (1) to fund scientific research on the conservation and use of marine and coastal resources, and (2) to provide marine outreach services by applying knowledge generated from that research, and our expertise, towards confronting the problems that the communities of people who utilize marine and coastal resources face every day.
Since the early ’80s, Sea Grant has operated side by side with the University of Puerto Rico, Campuses of Mayagüez and Humacao. Sea Grant’s work is based on collaboration between universities, industries, government agencies, and marine and coastal resource users. Our projects are carried out through research, education, and public service. The Sea Grant Program has three components: Research, Education, and Marine Advisory. These components are supported by our department of Communications.
