We present to you the full reports collection of the research project on the impact of sargassum on our coasts, led by principal investigator Dr. William J. Hernandez and students from the University of Puerto Rico Humacao campus. This research project is funded by us here at Sea Grant and in collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico Humacao Campus, Protectores de Cuencas, Palmas del Mar Homeowners Association – PHA, and the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies.

Dr. Hernandez (PI) was interviewed by national new radio program “Agenda Propia” from Radio Isla 1320 radio station to provide his insights on the new Sargassum arrivals in Puerto Rico. Also, Dr. Hernandez discussed the research on Sargassum by UPRM SeaGrant PR Program and how this information could support the development of a Sargassum management and mitigation plan by the Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA). The interview was conducted on March 20, 2023, in Spanish and can be found in the following link https://radioisla.tv/podcast-agenda-propia/

A Pilot Sargassum Management Prioritization Index (SMPI) was developed to identify potential areas impacted by Sargassum accumulation and decomposition, and areas where management interventions should be prioritized if Sargassum accumulates.
