Program Overview
Like many other islands in the Antilles, Puerto Rico features a vast natural resource known as the sea. In many ways, the sea is our “life support” system, because it provides us with not only with enjoyable weather conditions, food, recreation, livelihood, transportation routes, and a variety of products – it also provides us with 70% of the oxygen we breathe. Within Puerto Rico’s coastal zones, we can find unique and fragile ecosystems such as coral reefs, seagrass meadows, mangroves, and beaches.
This is why the University of Puerto Rico’s Sea Grant Program features a wide selection of educational services aimed at students and teachers alike. Through our Education component, the Program carries out lectures, workshops, study trips and laboratory experiences. We also spearhead projects aimed at improving ocean literacy in students, teachers, and communities. This section of the website presents the services the Program offers.
